Seven more bodies have been exhumed from Shakahola forest at the beginning of phase five of the ongoing exercise.
This recent discovery raises the total death toll to 436, as confirmed by government pathologist Johansen Oduor.
He further revealed that 50 graves have been earmarked for exhumation in this phase.
The exhumation exercise is a collaborative effort involving detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) homicide department and other agencies. The coordinated efforts aim to uncover the full extent of the tragic events that have taken place in the Shakahola forest.
the state has handed over the last of 34 bodies that had been positively identified. the majority of the exhumed bodies, over 400 in total, are currently being preserved in refrigerated containers stationed outside the Malindi Sub-county Hospital mortuary.
Between April 25, 2023, and October 2023, the government conducted a search and rescue operation while simultaneously exhuming bodies from various mass graves. At the end of the exercise, a total of 429 bodies were exhumed, and 67 adults and 25 children were rescued.
