Ex IEBC Chair Hassan among 41 judges shortlisted for appelate court slots

Former IEBC chairperson Ahmed Isaack Hassan is among 42 candidates shortlisted to be judges of the court of appeal.

The judicial service commission has said it received a total of 82 applications to fill 11 positions of court of appeal judges.

Other shortlisted candidates include Justices Hedwig Ongudi, Katwa Kigen, James Wakiaga, Anthony Charo Mrima, and Nduma Nderi among others.

Those who failed to make it to the shortlist include former IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati and former IEBC vice chair Lilian Mahiri Zaja.

JSC had on February 2, 2024, announced vacancies for 11 Court of Appeal judges who would serve until they attain the retirement age of 65 years (for early retirees) or 70 years as stipulated in the law.

JSC has slated the interviews for  3rd  to the 20th of June this year.

This as the Interviews for 20 new High Court judges by the Judicial Service Commission is ongoing

Close to 40  candidates of the 100 shortlisted have been interviewed with the exercise set to conclude on 30th of April.

The president of JSC Martha Koome noted that the recruitment of the judges is aimed at enhancing access to justice and boosting clearance of case backlog.

The High Court of Kenya currently has 78 Judges serving in 45 stations across the country.

The announcement came after President William Ruto met with CJ Koome and promised that the government would recruit 25 judges for the High Court and 11 judges for the Court of Appeal.
