Sifuna appeals for help from govt says flooding is at extreme levels

Nairobi senator Edwin Sifuna is now appealing to the national government to intervene in the ongoing efforts to rescue and settle displaced persons following the heavy rains experienced in the country in the past few days.

Sifuna said City hall is overwhelmed to meet the needs of thousands of city dwellers wreaked by the floods that have blocked passways, submerged homes and destroyed millions of property across the city .

According to Sifuna, the situation has escalated to extreme levels

“The situation in Nairobi has escalated to extreme levels. The County Government for all its efforts is clearly overwhelmed. We need all national emergency services mobilized to save live.” Sifuna tweeted.

Senator Sifuna has called upon the National government to mobilize national emergency services to safeguard lives within the city.

This, as the Kenya Red Cross Society has said it has rescued Eighteen people, including 11 adults and 7 children, in Mradi, Mathare 4A .

The humanitarian agency has noted it has deployed boots in other affected numerous areas urging vigilance for residents in Mukuru, Huruma, Ruaraka, Baba Dogo, Bosnia, Umoja 3, Choka, Njiru, Ruai, Utawala, Githurai, Kahawa, Eastern Bypass, among other areas.

The aid agency noted that the impact was exacerbated by the bursting of the banks of the Athi River leading to heavy traffic on major roads.

Aerodrome road, Kapenguria road,  UN Avenue – Runda road and the Kasarani-Mwiki Road at Mwiki Bridge have been partially closed.

The Kenya Urban Roads Authority has also warned Motorists of flooding along Mombasa Road at Cabannas, Thika road at Githurai or Kahawa bridge. 

Traffic police alongside its technical team are on the ground to direct traffic and enhance the safety of Motorists as the situation unfolds.

The Kenya Railways Authority has also suspended commuter trains within the city citing safety reasons over the ongoing rains
