Lobby urges restraint from flood prone areas as rains expected to intensify

Up to 24,741 households have been impacted in the ongoing rains with over 11,206 households displaced in 23 counties since the onset of the downpours that began in March.

In a status report, The Kenya red cross society asserts that Over 27,716 acres of crop land have been submerged with approximately 4,824 livestock deaths reported in the last one month.

The humanitarian agency notes that it has deployed boots in the affected parts of the country as over 188 people have so far been rescued.

This, as the Kenya met department has urged for more vigilance in high risk areas forecasting more rains in the next seven days.

Director of Met Services David Gikungu said  The expected heavy rainfall is likely to be accompanied by strong winds, thunder and lightning in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley which includes Nairobi, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu and Tharak Nithi.

Meanwhile, the death toll in the Lake Baringo boat tragedy has risen to seven after rescuers retrieved six more bodies.

The ill-fated vessel, carrying 23 high schoolers and grade 8 students, was en route to Kokwa Island for a church service when it capsized on Sunday.

A multi-agency response team, including the Kenya Red Cross, community members, and marine guards have been combing the lake waters for the missing passengers for the last three days.
