Police,Protesters engage in running battles in Nairobi demos

Anti-riot Police officers have been dispatched to various parts  of the country to disperse protesters who have defied Inspector general notice of participating in illegal protests.

A heavy police presence is felt in Mathare, Kibra ,Mlolongo and Thika road areas with major roads headed to Nairobi’s central business district now closed.

Moja Expressway company that runs the expressway has notified the road users to avoid the mlolongo to JKIA exit saying protesters have blocked it. 

Those using the road are however advised to use the JKIA entry to Westlands which is still functional. 

At the same time, police have been deployed at Azimio La Umoja One Kenya party leader Raila Odinga’s Karen home to keep vigil of his whereabouts following his call for anti government protests.

Odinga asked his supporters to head streets to picket over several issues among them President William Ruto defiance to listen to grievances of Kenyans over the high cost of living.

Nakuru, Nyeri, Mombasa, Kisumu and Kisii county residents are also sharing similar sentiments with scenes of protesters also taking to the streets

Meanwhile Several protesters and rights activists have been arrested in Mombasa and taken to Central Police Station.

Mombasa Central Police Station OCS Kipkirui Bor earlier on asked the demonstrators to disperse peacefully, saying that demonstrations were not allowed in Mombasa.

On Tuesday, Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome said the opposition has not presented any official notification to the police on the planned demos, hence the gatherings will be considered Illegal.

The IG vowed to use “all lawful means” to disperse any gatherings that will take place on Wednesday.
