Governors to convene in Mombasa for 3-day workshop

All 47 governors are set to convene in Mombasa for a 3-day orientation workshop, culminating in the election of the governor’s top leadership.

The inaugural council begins on Wednesday and lasts till Saturday.

In the session, they will vote to select their new leadership including the chair and vice-chairperson, whip and chairs of the council’s 18 committees.

This follows revelation that Bungoma governor Kenneth Lusaka, yesterday withdrew from the race, despite having picked nomination papers.

“I had the ambition, but I backed out for strategic reasons,” Lusaka said.

This comes as Joseph Ole Lenku, is seen as the most formidable candidate, given that he previously served in the national government as interior secretary and the fact that he is a second term governor.

According to Lusaka’s spokesman “the pastoralist community has no representation at the senior level of government, and he believes he will represent them there.”

Others expected to run after submitting nomination papers include, Wajir’s Ahmed Abdullahi, and Kirinyaga’s Anne Waiguru.
