The Catholic Church is calling on the government to address the rising cost of living.
Led by Archbishop Philip Anyolo of the Nairobi Archdiocese, the church says the government should urgently come up with interventions to lower the cost of living.
It says this will enable Kenyans to meet their daily needs.
The Church also challenged those currently holding government offices to ensure there is prudent utilization of public funds, which will create a conducive environment for food security, and manage the public debt.
“It is surprising that while drought and hunger loom in our borders and we are experiencing an increase in the price of the most basic food items and the government is silent about it. It is sad,” said Anyolo.
“Many Kenyans are hungry; the cost of living is rising. Inflation is worsening. We need urgent intervention from the county and national government,” he added.
This is as the price of basic commodities such as maize flour have gone up.
Most maize flour brands are retailing between 200 shillings and 220 shillings for a 2Kg packet, from a low approximately 150 shillings.
Cooking oil and milk are among commodities that have recorded a spike in the retail prices.
Cooking oil has risen by up to 40 percent while milk prices have increased from Sh48 to Sh55 per half-litre.
