West Pokot Governor John Lonyangapuo says education standards in the county have improved greatly since he occupied office in 2013.

Speaking from the county, the second term governor noted that this has been mainly achieved through the availability of bursaries provided by the county government.

He added that the construction of new schools and classrooms has also played a role in growing the literacy levels in the county, which now has a high number of learners attending adult classes.

“40 percent of the funds allocated to West Pokot by the treasury goes to the Ministry of Education,” said Lonyangapuo.

“We use more than 1 billion shillings annually to cover school fees for learners in form of bursaries. We have constructed a number of Early Childhood Development (ECD) Centres and also some new secondary schools,” he added.

This comes after a West Pokot County Integrated plan 2018-2022, indicated that West Pokot county has a low literacy level of 30 percent compared to the national literacy level of 62 percent.

The plan which is being overseen by the governor contains programs and projects designed with consideration to promoting equitable distribution of resources within the county.

It has so far seen the county government implement programs and projects aimed at improving
infrastructure, health-care services, education, environmental conservation, agricultural value
addition and disaster risk management.
