The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has extended the deadline for political parties to comply with the two-thirds gender rule.

IEBC says the deadline was to lapse on 9th of May, however, some parties were yet to meet the requirement hence the decision to extend the timeline to 12th of May 2022.

IEBC says the extension of the deadline is in line with the Constitution.

Chairperson Wafula Chebukati says non-compliant political parties will not participate in the August General Election.

“The Commission has reviewed the list of Political Parties that have resubmitted their respective nomination lists and found that there is a notable improvement in compliance. However, there are some Political Parties that are yet to resubmit their nomination lists due to time constraints,” says IEBC.

Political Parties have been told that there shall be no further extension beyond the May 12th date.
