Police blame church for failing to notify authorities of Gachagua’s visit leading to church mayhem

DCI and IEBC to arrest vandalisers of campaign material

Police have blamed the PCEA church in Mwiki, Kasarani, Nairobi County where Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was attacked by goons for failing to notify the police of the high profile engagement as the launched investigations into violent disruption that left several injured and property destroyed

The Sunday incident occurred when a group of rowdy youth stormed the church, demanding money and vandalizing property before being chased away by police.

According to authorities, over a hundred motorcycles, each carrying two to three passengers, arrived at the church shortly after the former DP’s entourage.

“The government effort to eradicate gangs and insecurity cases in Mombasa has been successful because of good relationships and cooperation between security agencies and local leaders,” he said

Witnesses reported that the youth, some of whom appeared to be armed, began causing commotion inside the church, harassing attendees and demanding handouts from politicians. 

Gunshots were heard during the confrontation, prompting officers from the Mwiki Police Station to rush to the location.

According to a DCI statement, preliminary findings indicate that the gunfire came from VIP security personnel and licensed civilian firearm holders who acted to protect the leaders from the advancing mob. 

Speaking from Mombasa county Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has said the police will get to the bottom of the matter and being the perpetrators to book.

“The government effort to eradicate gangs and insecurity cases in Mombasa has been successful because of good relationships and cooperation between security agencies and local leaders,” he said
