The government has disbursed Ksh.1.56 billion through the Higher Education Loans Board to support university and TVET students.
Education Cabinet Secretary Migos Ogamba confirmed that university students would benefit from the funds, which cover tuition and upkeep.
“A total of 31,263 TVET trainees and 33,863 university students would benefit from these loan disbursements,” stated the CS.
“The provision of this funding will ensure that student and trainee needs are met, enabling them to continue with their academic, training and research programmes without hindrance.”
The disbursement follows growing pressure from students and lawmakers over delays in HELB payments, which had left thousands stranded.
The funding setback stemmed from a High Court ruling on December last year which declared the new university funding model unconstitutional, halting its implementation until it met legal and constitutional requirements.
In response, the government pledged to revert to the previous HELB framework while working on a revised model.
The financial strain had triggered unrest in several institutions, with student protests and lecturers boycotting examinations in solidarity with affected learners. The government has assured continued support for students as efforts to streamline the funding system continue.
