Inspector general of the National Police Douglas Kanja has said the service does not have information on the whereabouts of Wajir MCA Yussuf Hussein Ahmed who has been missing for close to two months now.
Speaking when appearing before the National assembly departmental committee of national security, Kanja says the matter is still under active investigation to establish his whereabouts.
“So far, after the report was made to the police, we have been carrying out investigations and this case remains active to date. We have not gotten additional information on the whereabouts of the honourable member of Wajir,” Kanja told the committee.
His revelations come days after the member of the county assembly was mistakenly identified with a mutilated body found in Lake Yahud area. The family of the deceased, however, accused the government of depositing the wrong body in Lake Yahud to mislead them or as a cover-up.
Yusuf was abducted by armed individuals on the night of September 13 at Enterprise Road, Nairobi, on his way home from South C.
Kanja has now appealed to the public to provide the police service with any information regarding his disappearance
Yusuf’s case comes at a time where the country is witnessing a surge in the number of abductions, with others ending up dead while others rescued with torture injuries or mental traumas. Police officers have been placed as responsible for the abduction incidents.
Independent Police Over-sight Authority (IPOA) and human rights commission (KNHCR), speaking before the National Assembly security committee on Tuesday November 5, 2024, put police officers at the heart of rampant cases of abduction and extrajudicial killing of youth during and after the gen z led protests.
IPOA Chief Executive Officer Elema Halakhe said that some of the investigations they conducted pointed to the special unit.
“On the issue of police units we’ve been able to confirm for example where a kidnap has happened and we’ve been able to investigate and clearly from investigation is pointing to the special units.” Halakhe said.
Kanja insisted that investigations on the abductions and killings are still actively underway revealing that out of the 57 disappearances reported,22 were found alive, six are dead while 29 are still missing with security agencies fast tracking investigations on the remaining cases.
