KUPPET Calls Off Teachers Strike

The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has called off the teachers’ strike after reaching a deal with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

KUPPET Secretary General Akelo Misori announced the suspension of the strike during a press briefing, stating that a preliminary agreement had been reached with the TSC.

He directed all teachers registered under the union to resume their duties as the outstanding issues are addressed.

“In the ensuing arrangement and in compliance with the court order which is coming up on September 5, Thursday, from the union side, we suspend our strike and ask all our teachers to go back to class pending the speedy resolutions of these matters as already agreed upon between us and the commission,” he stated.

Misori said further communicaiton will be made by the union based on the outcome of a court ruling expected on Thursday.

“After a daylong meeting, we are happy to report to the nation that we have reached an amicable settlement which will enable out teachers resume duty immediately,” Macharia said.

Kuppet teachers have been on strike since August 16, pushing for among other issues promotion of 130,000 teachers, absorption of 46,000 JSS teachers on permanent and pensionable terms and remittance of statutory deductions.
