Parliament Directs TSC to Permanently Hire All JSS School Intern Teachers

The Budget and Appropriations Committee has directed the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to hire all Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers who were working as interns on permanent and pensionable terms.

Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro, the committee’s chairperson, assured that the government has allocated sufficient funds for this in the 2024/2025 Financial Year. He emphasized that the TSC should confirm the 46,000 interns soon after the budget is passed, instead of waiting until January 2025 as originally planned.

“I can assure this house that there are now sufficient resources to confirm the JSS interns into permanent and pensionable terms,” stated Ndindi Nyoro.

“From this floor of this house, I want to request the TSC as you appropriate this money kindly do not wait until January 2025 to confirm the interns, Please hasten their confirmation as soon as the budget is passed,” stated Ndindi Nyoro.

This directive follows a three-week strike by JSS intern teachers, who have now agreed to return to work after signing a return-to-work formula.

Some teachers, however, have refused to return until they are hired on permanent and pensionable terms, despite TSC’s concessions to withdraw show-cause letters and reinstate deregistered teachers.
