Former Sports Cabinet Secretary Rashid Echesa has been apprehended in connection with an investigation concerning allegations of an extortion scheme aimed at Kakamega Governor Fernandez Barasa.
Echesa was taken into custody at the Muthaiga police station after authorities picked him up from his residence this afternoon. He is scheduled to face charges on Tuesday.
According to his attorney, Danstan Omari, Echesa is being detained over accusations of extortion and orchestrating a staged abduction.
Police have indicated that Echesa had been eluding their efforts to question him for potential prosecution.
This comes after a man purportedly identified as Echesa’s accomplice was brought before the court on March 20th. William Simiyu Matere, also known as Elijah, was arraigned at the Kibera law Courts where he faced charges of extorting over Sh240 million from Governor Barasa.
Matere was charged with two offenses: demanding property with threats and conspiracy to commit a felony, during his appearance before Kibera Senior Principal Magistrate Ann Mwangi.
