The County Government of Nairobi has shut down at least 120 liquor-selling joints for non-compliance following a crackdown ordered by Governor Johnson Sakaja.
The operation, initiated over the weekend, has also led to the apprehension of 25 bar owners in the Starehe sub county.
The Office of the Governor revealed that the operation team was organized into six groups, with one focusing on the Country Bus Station.
In this area, 10 outlets were closed down, and four suspects were arrested for the sale of illicit brew.
At the Muthurwa Terminus, 20 outlets were closed and no suspect was arrested.
Some 23 liquor outlets were closed at Hakati Bus Station Terminus with nine people having been arrested.
At the Accra Road Terminus, 27 outlets were hit down and eight arrested while along Latema Road Terminus 18 premises were closed and nobody was arrested.
Another 22 outlets were closed at the Old Nation Roundabout Terminus with six suspects being arrested.
The arrested individuals have been booked at Kamukunji police station.
The crackdown follows a directive by Sakaja to clamp down on all wines and spirit joints located near terminals in the sub-county.
“Drivers and touts are spending most of their time in these wines and spirits that have turned into bars and drinking dens as they wait for customers. We have even discovered that all these bars targeted have been operating with the required licenses,” he said.
During a meeting with the Matatu Owners Association and officials from the National Transport and Safety Authority on February 24, Sakaja raised concerns over increased road crashes which have been linked to drunk driving.
