The council of Governors has demanded an apology from the inspector general of police over what they term as arbitrary arrest of Governor Kawira Mwangaza.
The council has accused Japheth Koome of causing embarrassment and humiliation to the Meru county governor because she was subject to the police officers.
“We urge the IG to issue a public apology to Mwangaza for the embarrassment. We urge the police to refrain from being used to settle political scores and rely on facts and objectivity in the execution of their duties.”
“The action of the police demonstrates a disturbing pattern of attacking and intimidating Governors.”
In the statement by the Vice chairperson Ahmed Abdullahi the caucus has now asked the IG to institute an investigation into the officers responsible for the arrest and institute disciplinary action against them
The officers who arrested Kawira argued that it was a case of mistaken identity while she released her as she was running a different errand from the one outlawed by Interior CS Kithure Kindiki.
“Governors are elected state officers and heads of county governments who are well known to the public. The case of mistaken identity therefore presented by the police is laughable,” they said in a statement.
Governor Kawira was bundled up in a police land cruiser in Riuga constituency, an act that the council describes as humiliating because there are other alternative means of sermoning the county boss.
Abdullahi has asked the police to refrain from being used to settle political scores and rely on objectivity when undertaking their duties.
