Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza has been released after being arrested by the police in Imenti constituency Meru county. This comes after police showed up at a homestead where she was donating a cow under her ‘Okolea’ outreach program that was recently banned by Interior CS Kithure Kindiki.
The governor announced the release via her Facebook account after being ‘held’ for about two hours.
“Finally, I’m free. I thank God I’m safe, OCS has apologised akasema sorry,” she said.
During her arrest, she accused the police of being used in the political woes.
Mwangaza has over the past months been engaged in fights with local leaders including Agriculture CS Mithika Linturi, accusing them of meddling in the affairs of the county.
Despite her arrest, the governor maintained that she would continue with the program given its benefits to the residents.
But the police insisted that they had not arrested the county boss.
“Contrary to the false allegations circulating on the social media, the National Police Service wishes to clarify, that Police have not arrested Meru Governor, Hon Kawira Mwangaza,” NPS said in a statement.
Earlier, an officer in charge had an argument with Mwangaza saying the governor got into the police van by herself.
But the governor insisted she had been arrested.
“Why were you arresting me yet I told you this is not an Okolea programme,” Mwangaza asked.
“You are the one who ordered me to get in the police van,” Mwangaza added.
Three weeks ago, CS Kindiki banned the governor’s private charity initiative dubbed Okolea, after violence broke out at Maua town.
