Kenya, US sign a 5-Year Defense Cooperation Agreement To Strengthen Bilateral Relations And Security

The United States and the Government of Kenya Have inked a 5 year defense cooperation agreement aimed at strengthening counter-terrorism efforts in East Africa and supporting Kenya’s efforts to take the lead in a security mission to Haiti.

Defence Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale and his US counterpart Lloyd Austin presided over the event at Defence headquarters in Nairobi. 

Duale said the framework covers 2023-28 and marks a significant milestone in bilateral commitment to peace and stability in the region.

Duale says the agreement opens doors for exploring and expanding collaboration in the realm of defense technology and innovation. 

He emphasized that the framework not only enhances Kenya’s defense capabilities but also contributes to the country’s economic growth through joint ventures and technology sharing.

We share commitment to democracy and stability at large,” he said.

“The framework places a special emphasis on enhancing military interoperability between our two militaries. In an increasingly complex and interconnected world, our ability to work seamlessly together is paramount.”

U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin on his part lauded Kenya’s willingness to consider leading a multinational security support mission in Haiti. 

“We are appealing to other countries to join Kenya’s example by providing all that is needed to ensure stability in Haiti,” Austin said.

He announced that the US was prepared to support the Haiti mission by providing substantial financial and logistical assistance, with plans to work with the United States Congress to allocate up to $100 million in support.
