Bungoma Law Court Principal Magistrate Tom Olando has ordered the release of Eliud Wekesa, popularly known as Yesu wa Tongaren.

Wekesa was released after the prosecution said they had no evidence against him.

The leader of New Jerusalem Church, spent five days in police custody,  as detectives investigated alleged offenses against him including cult activities.

He was accused of running a religious cult in Tongaren, purporting to be Jesus Christ, teaching radical ideologies to his followers,as well as promoting money laundering.

This comes after a section of MPs from Bungoma county has demanded the release of Bungoma-based preacher Eliud Wekesa, popularly known as Yesu wa Tongaren.

Led by Tongaren MP John Chikati, the lawmakers added that the preacher’s release should include no bond terms.

“Na tunauliza ya kwamba atolewe without any conditions. Asipatiwe bond yoyote atolewe on free bond (We ask that his release comes without conditions. He should not be given any bond term. He should be released on free bond),” Chikati said.

He added that Yesu wa Tongaren presented no harm, saying he was a man focused on praying for people.

Chikati said the preacher is a poor man who can not be associated with money laundering.

The MP was accompanied by Webuye East MP Martin Wanyonyi.
