There is heavy police presence in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) amid anticipated Azimio demonstrations.

By around 5 am police were already in the streets of Nairobi with water cannons also stationed at strategic places.

Reports say deployments started at midnight on Sunday with police at times mounting roadblocks to inspect approaching vehicles.

Anti-riot police blocked Nyerere-Processional roads intersection, with others stationed at St Teresa’s junction Juja road and  along the new Lang’ata – Kibra bypass.

Security forces have also been deployed near government buildings: including State Houses, stadiums, and prominent squares.

Earlier, there was unrest in Kibra Constituency at around 9:35 am after a group of youths lit a bonfire at the Olympic stage junction.

The youths said they were readying themselves to march to Nairobi CBD for the Azimio la Umoja anti-government protests.

A similar situation was reported in Mathare.

At the centre of Raila Odinga’s call for mass action is the urge for the government to lower the cost of living and address alleged vote rigging claims in last year’s election.

Odinga announced that the protests will be held every Monday and Thursday each week until President William Ruto submits to their demands.
