Petrol stations selling contaminated fuel have been exposed by the Energy Petroleum and Regulatory Authority (EPRA).

In a statement, EPRA says the four stations which are in different parts of the country failed to meet the thresholds set under Energy Regulations 2013.

The stations were found in Kiambu, Machakos, Kajiado and Bungoma counties.

“During the period July – September 2022, a total of 1,360 tests were conducted at 256 petroleum sites. From the tests, 98.44 per cent of the sites were found to be compliant. However, tests from four sites turned out to be non-compliant,” said EPRA in a notice.

In Machakos and Bungoma counties, EPRA shut all the super petrol dispensing pumps in the flagged filling stations.

In Kiambu, a filling station was penalized Ksh500,000 and ordered to upgrade the product.

Meanwhile, an entire petrol station was shut down for an unspecified period in Kajiado county.

This is after it was found selling diesel and super petrol contamianted with domestic kerosene and containing high sulphur.

EPRA has now called on the public to report any suspected cases of illegal trade of LPG in cylinders

“Members of the public are requested to be vigilant and are encouraged to report any suspected cases of illegal trade of LPG in cylinders through this hotline number (0709336000).”

This is as the the process of testing fuel retailing at different petroleum sites is ongoing countrywide.
