Police call on Kenyans to remain peaceful

The National Police Service is urging Kenyans to maintain peace after the declaration of Monday’s presidential election results.

In a statement, the Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai has appealed to members of the public to maintain law and order after the poll.

According to Mutyambai, the elections are not meant to divide or tear Kenyans apart.

“The National Police Service (NPS) congratulates Kenyans on exercising their constitutional right to vote, which they did by turning up in their numbers to elect their leaders. We also thank the people of Kenya for having maintained calm and peace and generally observed law and order since the election day to this day” said the IG.

“Kenyans are requested to keep the peace and to continue observing law and order even after today’s declaration of the presidential election results”, he added as he made an impassioned plea for unity.

“Elections are seasonal, while Kenya must endure for eternity. They are not meant to divide or tear us apart. We must remain together, for Kenya is greater than any one of us. In the words of our National Anthem. may we dwell in unity, peace and liberty”.

This comes after four IEBC commissioners Irene Masit, Juliana Cherera, Francis Wanderi and Justus Nyang’aya said they did not agree with the results presented by the chair Wafula Chebukti.

The declaration of the results which saw UDA’s William Ruto declared the president elect continues to elicit mixed reactions.

Whereas Ruto supporters celebrate the win, those of Raila express disappointment, demanding that he moves to court to challenge the outcome.
