DDP Haji says Sonko’s appeal to the EACJ will bear no fruits

The Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji says former Nairobi governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko will get a similar ruling if he proceeds to the East African court of Justice to petition the supreme court.

Speaking in a Local Media house, Haji said Sonko’s chances are slim and expressed confidence in the supreme court decision to lock out Sonko from the Mombasa gubernatorial race.

In his opinion, the DPP said the grounds on which Sonko has chosen to pursue his case are not very strong despite him having the right to do so.

The DPP further said Sonko’s  lawyers are busybodies who are  misleading their client and are pushing back the fight against corruption in the Country.

Sonko is exhausting his legal avenues to ensure that he is on the ballot come August 9.

Sonko’s chances are very slim but he has the constitutional right to exhaust all means available to him,” he stated.

On Monday, Sonko filed an application before the East African Court of Justice seeking to suspend the implementation of the Supreme Court decision that upheld his impeachment.

He said the decision of the Supreme Court and courts of Kenya were arrived at in an unjust manner.

Its effect, Sonko said, is to curtail his political rights and the rights of the  people he represents.

At the same time, the ex governor has asked the Supreme Court to review the decision that upheld his impeachment.

As a result, the Supreme Court will start reviewing his impeachment case from Monday.

However, DPP Haji applauded the Supreme Court on decision that once one is impeached they are barred from holding a position in public office.

He added that the DPP and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) have been pushing for this ruling and both offices can now see the decision bearing fruits.

Early this year, Haji had urged EACC and the National Council on the Administration of Justice (NCAJ) to stop politicians facing integrity issues from running for office.
