Agriculture CS Peter Munya says the government will suspend all charges on imported maize from around the world for 90 days.
To this effect, from 1st July the prices of maize flour will lower drastically, and will remain so until the harvest season – which starts in October.
The CS, said the prices of animal feed will also come down, after yellow maize has been ordered to be imported.
Munya explained that some individuals and prominent farmers in the country are hoarding maize, a move that has caused the prices of maize meals to shoot up.
Among levies waived by the government in this course include, the KEBS levy, KEPHIS levy, AFCA levy, Port health service levy and KRA levy among others.
Flour companies have also been granted permission to import maize without tax duty.
This initiative is all in a bid to ensure that the cost of flour production decreases, consequently decreasing the cost of flour and animal feed.
