Kenyans have been urged to desist from making extra-normal bulk purchases of petroleum products.

Addressing the press in Nairobi, Energy Cabinet Secretary (CS) Monica Juma said the increased demand creates false constraints leading to disruptions.

“Let us await for the system to re-calibrate and normalize. There is more than sufficient supply to meet our normal demand, but there can never be enough supply to meet hoarding that we have witnessed in the last few days,” said Juma.

She then noted that the ministry has come to an agreement with the Oil Marketing Companies to address the lack of fuel at pump stations across the country.

“We have held meetings with oil marketing companies to address any concerns and stress. We have offered firm assurances of government’s full commitment to honour any obligations.”

According to Juma, the fuel crisis called for deliberate efforts to avoid sabotaging the country’s economy.

“We have decided as government that this is not an acceptable situation and Kenyans should not be subjected to this situation…this situation equates to deliberate efforts to sabotage this economy which is a capital crime,” she said.

Some retailers who have been found to be offering petrol at increased prices, have been issued with show-cause letters.

“During the stress period, some retailers were offering petrol at increased prices consequently, they have been issued with show-cause letters by EPRA. The govt will not tolerate any entity that is causing artificial distress. Any entity that is not ready to work within the laws of Kenya they are invited to leave the market,” said the CS.
