More than 900 aspirants apply as independent candidates

More than 900 aspirants who are eyeing various elective seats, have applied to contest as independent candidates.

This number is expected to rise following fears of party nominations.

The Registrar of Political Parties Ann Nderitu says 650 applicants had been cleared and their symbols approved.

Those who intend to vie as independent candidates have until the 2nd of May to make their submissions.

Elsewhere, political parties will have the party voter register by Saturday 2 April, 2022, to prepare for the nominations from next week.

Furthermore, Nderitu said, the process of certifying aspirants and the party register is ongoing.

Any aspirant who will be found not to be in the party register will be barred from participating in the election, but has a window to be an independent candidate.

The Registrar of Political Parties has since advised aspirants intending to vie for the August 9th, 2022 general election to make their mind in good time on the political party choice or decide to be independents.
