Two Homa Bay County Officials Arrested Over Fraud

Two Homa Bay county officials and a former county assembly clerk have been arrested by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) officers for defrauding the county 85 million shillings.

They were arrested alongside three other directors of Nyangume  and Damila Enterprises that received the suspect irregular payments from the regional assembly.

The former assembly clerk Bob Kephas Otieno, chief finance officer Caroline Sang, senior accounts controller Maurice Amek, Eveline Awino, David Obonyo, and Lilian Achieng, and the directors of Damila Enterprises David Obonyo and Lilian Achieng will be arraigned in court on Tuesday.

They will be charged with conspiracy to commit an economic crime, abuse of office, and unlawful acquisition of public property.

EACC Chief Executive Officer Twalib Mbarak says the suspects conspired to steal public funds through irregular tenders and disbursement of multiple monthly salaries.

The companies that were awarded the tenders, the EACC boss said, are associated with the officials.

The County Assembly Clerk is said to have received 24.2 million shillings and 750,000 shillings from Damila and Nyangume respectively.

Chief Finance Officer Caroline Sang and Senior Accounts controller Maurice Amek received 3.95 million and 5 million shillings each from Damila Enterprises as benefits.
