The state has now launched a Covid-19 vaccination drive targeting over one million operators in the public transport sector.

The drive which was launched in Nairobi, is being rolled out under the theme ‘Pata Chanjo, Tuimarishe Usafiri’.

The drive will be undertaken jointly with the Ministry of Health and that of Transport.

Health CS Mutahi Kagwe called on the sector players to receive the Covid-19 jabs.

You are part of our front-line officers as well. Without you, we are much weaker, our own nurses cannot get to work. When you are vaccinated we consider you a shujaa,” said Kagwe.

CS Kagwe then expressed concern over the low uptake of vaccines in parts of the country despite the presence of sufficient doses, “We have enough vaccines in the country and continue to receive more. I wish to encourage County Governments  to also launch initiatives such as this to mobilize more people to get vaccinated.”

Transport CS James Macharia also urged sector operators to get vaccinated.

You don’t know who is getting into those buses….therefore get the vaccine for your protection,” said Macharia.

Federation of public transport sector chairperson Edwin Mukabana said the public transport sector should ensure continued adherence to covid-19 protocols if the successes recorded in recent months are to be sustained.
