Nigeria’s president Muhammadu Buhari has announced lifting the ban on twitter in his country. The President was however categorical that lifting of the ban is dependent on Twitter meeting the conditions set by the Presidential Committee over which they engaged on.

Buhari spoke while making his independence day speech and urged against misusing the platform to organize, coordinate, and execute criminal activities, propagate fake news, and promote ethnic and religious sentiments.

He acknowledged the fact that Twitter is used to disseminate information. Still, he warned about bad actors who misuse the platform to “organise, coordinate, and execute criminal activities, propagate fake news, and promote ethnic and religious sentiments.”

Hence, the reason why his government decided to suspend the social media platform’s operations in the country on June 5. He said this has allowed the government to put measures in place to address these challenges.
