A petition to compel government to provide sanitary towels to public school girls lodged

As the  World marks the Menstrual Hygiene Day on 28th May , a petition has been filed at the Milimani Law Courts seeking to have the government directed to provide free sanitary towels to girls in public schools.

The petitioner, lawyer Elvis Nyachiro, says that the State has no reason why it cannot  provide sanitary towels to school going children. He added  that the lack of sanitary towels, has led more than 60% of girls missing  school during menses and suffer gross indignity.

Justice Makau has directed that the application be served to the respondents and that the respondents do file and serve their responses to the application before the next mention date. The matter will be mentioned on June 2nd .

Menstrual Hygiene Day (MH Day) is a global advocacy platform that brings together the voices and actions of non-profits, government agencies, individuals, the private sector and the media to promote good menstrual health and hygiene (MHH) for all women and girls.

MH Day was initiated by the German non-profit WASH United in 2013. WASH United is the overall global coordinator of MH Day and acts as its international secretariat.
