Villarreal beat Manchester United in Gdansk to win the Europa league

Villareal beat Manchester United on Penalties to lift the Europa league which is their first major trophy in  their history.

With the match ending one all in 120 minutes ,  David de Gea missed the eleventh penalty to hand Unai Emery side the victory.

All 20 outfield players converted their penalties in the longest shootout in a final of any Uefa competition, and in an increasingly tense stadium Villarreal goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli scored  and then denied De Gea.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side did not start well and fell behind to a soft goal from Gerard Moreno.

Edinson Cavani pulled United level 10 minutes into the second period after a Marcus Rashford shot had been deflected into his path but they could not get a winner.

Reacting to the loss, Ole accepted that the season has not been a success for Manchester United but believes his squad has the right characters to do better next term.

Former United midfielder Paul Scholes, speaking as part of BT Sport’s punditry team, questioned whether United’s players hurt enough after a defeat.

But Solskjaer stood up for his team and believes they possess the right character to respond positively to Wednesday’s defeat in Gdansk.

The Red Devils finished second in the Premier League but have not won a trophy since 2017.
