Tanzania has suspended flights to and from India amid a surge in COVID-19 cases in India.

The East African nation joins a growing list of countries from the region that have stopped flights to and from India, including Uganda and Kenya.

India’s new Covid-19 variant is said to be 2.5 times more transmissible.

Statistics by the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research show that one person can infect over three people they come in contact with.

However the country’s Health Minister Abel Makubi says exceptions will be made for cargo planes and pre-approved flights on humanitarian, diplomatic, and medical missions.

This becomes the recent Covid-19 measure put in place by Tanzania’s new President Samia Suluhu Hassan.

Her excellency’s approach in handling the Covid-19 is different from the late President John Pombe Magufuli.

This is because the deceased downplayed the severity of the virus and encouraged natural remedies to combat it.
