India officially passes 20 million covid cases

The number of new Covid infections in India has officially passed 20 million cases, even as the government says that infection rates are coming down.

The country that has today recorded 355,832 cases, says infections have consistently dropped since 30 April, when it recorded more than 400,000 cases.

The city reported that 448 people died on Monday marking yet another record toll.

Experts however say the number of deaths and infections are being underreported.

This comes even as authorities reported lack of cremation places due to the concurrent number of deaths in the nation.

The United States has told its citizens to leave India as soon as possible as the country battles a devastating coronavirus wave being the highest advisory of its kind issued by the Department of State.

India reported 379,257 new infections as of being the world’s highest single-day total.

The US embassy warned that “access to all types of medical care is becoming severely limited”.

The overall death toll in India officially surpassed 200,000 on Wednesday, though experts believe the actual number could be much higher.
