Kenya approves use of Sputnik V COVID vaccine

The Pharmacy and Poisons Board has approved Emergency use of the Russian-made COVID-19 vaccine, Sputnik V.

The vaccine, which has a 92 percent efficacy rate, is Kenya’s first private vaccine consignment.

According to the  Pharmacy and Poisons Board , before a vaccine is considered for approval, sufficient scientific and clinical evidence must be collected to show that it is safe, effective and of suitable quality.

The Board says that in reviewing the Sputnik V vaccine, it was concluded to be safe.

The board said, “This is not a registration. The application for Emergency Use Authorization of Russia’s Sputnik V vaccine has been approved after it met all requirements.”

The vaccine is however yet to be included in the National Vaccination Program by the Ministry of Health.

Russia has developed three vaccines which are Sputnik V, EpiVacCorona and CoviVac.
