Administration of AstraZeneca vaccine for health workers commences in Kiambu today

March, 8th 2021 – Administration of the AstraZeneca Covid 19 vaccine for health workers in Kiambu started today in all the devolved units targeting 6,000 health personnel in both private and public sectors.

The county received 13,500 doses from the one million vaccines that arrived in the country last week, making kenya among the first countries to receive a shipment of the doses.

Kiambu office in charge of health Patrick Nyaga was the first in the county to receive his dose at the Thika level five hospital then was followed by other county healthcare officials.

Speaking at the hospital Patrick Nyaga said the introduction of the vaccine has leveraged them in their line of service.

Nyaga said, “After losing several of my colleagues, classmates and close friends to the virus, I have been waiting for the vaccine to set myself free from fears of contracting the disease. I’m now looking forward to May 8, to receive the second jab,”

Speaking after launching the event Joseph Murega, county executive committee member in charge of health said that the exercise will be at both the thika and kiambu level five hospitals due to other counties large healthcare workers.

Murega said, “This is the time we have been waiting for and it is now your time to take the vaccine. We have suffered enough from the virus as front-line workers. It is time to protect yourselves.”

Meanwhile, the country has recorded 53 Covid-19 recoveries, 32 from the Home-Care program and 21 from different hospitals. The total number of recoveries now stands at 87,623.

However, Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe says that 337 new cases have been recorded out of a sample size of 2,924.

The total number now stands at 109,164. 3 patients have succumbed, pushing the country’s cumulative fatalities to 1,879.
