Student in custody for inciting arson in school

Feb, 22nd 2021 – A form 3 student from Kamama Boys High School in Embu County is in police custody for being linked to the cause of fire at Mugumo girls high school in Kirinyaga.

Investigations established that the suspect sneaked into Mugumo Girls Secondary School and gave his girlfriend a cigarette lighter to torch a 220 capacity girl’s dormitory.

According to Gichungu Sub-County Police Commander Anthony Mbogo, the form three was arrested at Kimunye village. He said, “His parent told us Kamama Boys in Embu was closed last week after student destroyed school properties.”

He added, “Some students who are being held here at Kianyaga Police Station mentioned the suspect and they have agreed to be State witnesses.”

Nine students from Mugumo Girls are being held at Kianyaga police station in connection with the incident. Kirinyaga county commissioner Jim Njoka has issued a stern warning to students torching schools or causing chaos in the institutions. 

Confirming the arrests on Sunday, Millicent Ochuka who works with the DCI in Gichugu East said that investigations are underway. She said, “We have been investigating a Sunday incident that happened between 2 pm and 3 pm when the other students were doing studies.”

Mbogo also mention that there is a search for another student who is alleged to have accompanied the suspect to the school.

Kirinyaga County Commissioner Jim Njoka has issued a stern warning to students who burn down their school facilities saying thet they will be treated as criminals once caught.

Ochuka added that personal items of unknown value were destroyed during the incident.
