Gusii stadium to be renamed in memory of Nyachae

Feb, 15th 2021 – Gusii Stadium in Kisii County will be renamed the Simeon Nyachae Stadium in honour of the former Cabinet minister who was buried today.

President Uhuru Kenyatta gave the order at Nyachae’s funeral service, adding that Sh150 million will be allocated to the county government for the completion of the project.

The head of state said, “In his memory, as a government, we have considered it fit to rename this stadium, Gusii Stadium, the Simeon Nyachae Stadium. And to ensure that this stadium is completed by the end of this year and to an international standard, we will allocate an additional Sh150m to the county government.”

He said the stadium must be completed this year and must meet international standards.

President Kenyatta further directed the Sports ministry to immediately embark on the construction of a sports academy at Nyanturago, which will be named Nyantika Mayioro Sports Academy.

He said, “Today I direct the Cabinet Secretary of Sports, Culture and Heritage to embark immediately on setting up a sports academy at Nyanturago Stadium.”

Addressing mourners, President Kenyatta eulogized the late Nyachae as as a disciplined and honest man of dignity whose service to Kenya was characterised by utmost integrity.

President Kenyatta said, “Without doubt, he was a disciplinarian. Not only a disciplinarian in disciplining others but in the discipline with which he carried himself”

His family confirmed that Nyachae was diagnosed with cancer in 2012 and received treatment in both Kenya and the UK. He died on the 1st of February aged 88.
