Homa Bay County Assembly passes BBI Bill

Feb, 11th 2021 – The Homa Bay County Assembly has today passed the Building Bridges Initiative Bill, becoming the third assembly to pass the bill.

The MCAs unanimously passed the bill which was tabled before the house by Justice and Legal Affairs committee chairman Ajimba Ayieta, and seconded by nominated MCA Kevin Onyango.

The speaker Elizabeth Ayoo signed the certificate before forwarding it to parliament. The bill requires the approval of at least 24  county assemblies before it can move to the next stage.

This comes at a time when Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) was barred by the court from holding a referendum. A 5-judge bench ruling presided by Justice Joel Ngugi stopped IEBC from conducting a referendum on the BBI Bill.

The order stands pending hearing of seven consolidated petitions challenging BBI’s legality. However, the judges ruled that the County Assemblies and Parliament should continue public engagements and deliberate on the Bill.

Currently, Homa Bay, Siaya and Kisumu counties have approved the bill.
