The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has condemned former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua over controversial remarks likening the 2007/2008 post-election violence to a “Christmas party.”
The Commission described the comments as reckless, insensitive, and a threat to national unity.
Speaking during an interview With local media Gachagua warned of potential unrest in the 2027 elections if the process is mismanaged, stating, “2007 will look like a Christmas party.”
“There is nothing festive about the deaths, displacement, and devastation that marked that period. To trivialise such a profound national tragedy is to dishonour the memory of the victims and the resilience of the survivors,” Kobia said.
“With the mood in the country, if the IEBC tries to mess with the elections, there will be no country here. I want to tell you, 2007 will look like a Christmas party,” he said during the interview.
NCIC Chair Samuel Kobia said the remarks dishonor the memory of victims and undermine peace efforts.
The Commission warned other leaders against similar inflammatory rhetoric, promising action and urging a shift toward issue-based, unifying politics.
