Waititu Granted Nod to Amend Petition as He Appeals Graft Conviction

Former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu, who is currently serving a 12-year prison sentence over corruption-related charges, has received a lifeline after the High Court granted him permission to amend his petition seeking release on bail.

Waititu had earlier filed an application challenging his conviction in a Ksh.588 million graft case. However, his initial request for bail was rejected, with the court pledging to expedite the hearing of his appeal.

In a fresh application, the former county chief sought to revise his petition by introducing new evidence and additional grounds to strengthen his case for release.

The court has now allowed these amendments, giving Waititu a renewed opportunity to push for his freedom as he awaits the determination of his appeal.

Waititu was convicted of conflict of interest and sentenced to serve 12 years behind bars or pay a fine of Ksh.52.5 million. He was also disqualified from holding any public office for seven years.

His wife, Susan Ndung’u, who was charged alongside him, was sentenced to one year in prison or pay a fine of Ksh.500,000.

The case remains one of the high-profile convictions in the country’s anti-graft war.
