IMF Begins Review of Kenya’s Corruption and Governance Issues

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has launched an official review of Kenya’s corruption and governance challenges, according to Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi.

Speaking after a meeting with IMF official Rebecca Sparkman in Nairobi, Mudavadi said the assessment will help the government implement governance reforms to combat corruption and boost economic growth.

The review follows Kenya’s request for a Governance Diagnostic Assessment, beginning with a scoping mission before a full assessment later this year.

President William Ruto’s administration invited the IMF team after pressure from young protesters demanding accountability. Ruto has pledged legal reforms to crack down on corruption and government waste.

The IMF has urged Kenya to intensify efforts to address economic challenges following taxation reforms that led to mass protests in June last Year. The review will examine vulnerabilities in fiscal governance, central bank operations, financial oversight, market regulation, rule of law, and anti-money laundering.
