West Kenya Sugar Company has initiated the process of reviving the distillery and co-generation plants at the embattled Mumias Sugar Company Limited, in compliance with a directive from President William Ruto.
In a letter addressed to Mumias Sugar Company on January 23, 2025, West Kenya Sugar confirmed its commitment to the revival project, which follows the President’s directive issued on January 20.
As part of the process, West Kenya Sugar has requested permission to deploy its security personnel to protect the plants, alongside the existing security provided by the Receiver Manager.
The company has urged Mumias Sugar to cooperate and facilitate access to the facilities.
This move comes after President Ruto launched the first-ever bonus payments to farmers supplying cane to Mumias Sugar, emphasizing the success of recent reforms in the sugar sector.
