The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has imposed significant sanctions on the Congolese Football Federation (FECOFOOT) following a complaint from the Equatorial Guinea Football Federation.
As a result of serious breaches of regulations, Congo’s qualification for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) has been overturned, and their place will now be taken by Equatorial Guinea.
CAF found that Congo violated key regulations during their qualifiers. FECOFOOT failed to present valid national licenses for the players, which is a mandatory requirement for participation in CHAN. Additionally, the Congolese side fielded an ineligible player, Mankou Nguembete Japhet Eloi, during the first two matches. This violation led to the disqualification of both games.
As a result, the matches between Equatorial Guinea and Congo (December 21, 2024) and Congo against Equatorial Guinea (December 29, 2024) have been declared lost by forfeit for Congo, with a 3-0 scoreline awarded to Equatorial Guinea.
