The Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) and the Kenya Universities Staff Union (KUSU) have officially called off their two-week strike after successfully negotiating with an inter-ministerial committee.
The decision to end the strike follows an agreement on a return-to-work formula, aimed at restoring normalcy in public universities where learning had been severely disrupted.
The unions emphasized that the resolution reached would protect the rights of their members, stating that no UASU member would face victimization or disciplinary action for participating in the industrial action.
Labour and Social Protection Cabinet Secretary Dr. Alfred Mutua on Wednesday moved in to resolve the stalemate, engaging the unions officials in discussions aimed at finding a solution.
The deal involved the Inter-Public Universities Councils Consultative Forum (IPUCCF), the Federation of Kenya Employers (FKE) and three major unions: the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU), the Kenya Universities Staff Union (KUSU) and the Kenya Union of Domestic, Hotels, Educational Institutions, Hospitals and Allied Workers (KUDHEIHA).
An inter-ministerial committee included representatives from the Ministry of Education, the Treasury, the Salaries and Remuneration Commission and the Ministry of Labour.
