Ruto puts entities emptying waste into rivers on notice

President William Ruto has issued a stern warning to all enablers of river pollution.

Speaking during the launch of the Nairobi River Regeneration Project in Korogocho Ruto said the pollutants must all be ready to be held accountable for their actions and  insisted those responsible for pollution must also be ready to take responsibility so that the rivers in the country can be kept clean.

“Those entities that are polluting our rivers will be held responsible. The raw sewage coming from our public entities, the solid waste that is in this river coming from different places, on the basis of extended producer responsibility; each and every one of them will be held to account.

“All of us, if you pollute the rivers, you must prepare to make sure that you are held to account and you pay for it so that we can keep the river clean and everybody becomes responsible for their behaviour. If you are not in good behaviour know that you are going to pay for bad behaviour,” Ruto stated.

This as he announced that through the county and national government up to 20,000 youth will be absorbed as the state embarks in the regeneration drive.

“In one year’s time, we want Nairobi River to change. The whole section along Nairobi river is going to be divided and we will ensure that there will be people at every stage,” he said.

“Our youth have an opportunity to contribute to the improvement of our environment.”

The project dubbed Climate WorX Mtaani is a National Government climate action and livelihoods initiative that will engage approximately 200,000 youth in environmental sustainability programmes including the 15 Billion National Tree Growing Programme.
