The Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) has criticized President William Ruto following his recent remarks claiming he was unaware of any cases of alleged police abductions.
In a statement, the Commission labeled the President’s comments as a “blatant lie” and vowed to hold him accountable for the reported cases of forced disappearances.
“President Ruto’s claim that he’s unaware of any Kenyan forcibly disappeared by security agents during anti-government protests is a blatant lie,” the commission claimed.
KHRC asserted that the families of those abducted or killed during the recent anti-government demonstrations are yet to receive any form of compensation, despite the government’s awareness of these incidents.
The statement came shortly after President Ruto directed the Interior Ministry to expedite investigations into all cases of alleged abductions.
Speaking during a town hall meeting in Kisumu, the President assured the public that the government would take firm and decisive action against those responsible.
“If there is a family, any family whose child or their friend or relative, went to a demonstration, last year or this year and never came back, I want to know the names,” Ruto directed.
“I will take firm and decisive action because as I talk to you today, I don’t have a single name of somebody who has been abducted or disappeared.”
president Ruto noted that all Kenyans had the right and freedom of association and that no Kenyan should be subjected to inhuman treatment because of their political stand.
