Israel has called for new sanctions on Iran in a United Nations Security Council meeting in New York that it called for after Iran launched drones and missile attacks in what was their first ever direct attack on Israel.

Iran launched the attack in response to Israel’s attack on the Iranian consulate in Syria that killed Iranian officials.

Iranian foreign minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian says that prior warning was given before the attack and that it gave a wide notice days before its drone and missile attack on Israel.

Israel has however claimed that it countered more than 300  drones and missiles accounting to 99% of the machinery in the attack.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has said there is need to prevent further escalation as world leaders spoke against the attack in Israel

United States president Joe Biden had earlier on promised ‘ironclad’ support to the security of Israel , just after the strike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria.

United Kingdom Prime Minister Rishi Sunak also released a statement condemning in the strongest terms the attack against Israel. He further added that the UK will stand with Israel’s security and that of its regional partners.

If this attack would have been successful, the fallout for regional stability would be hard to overstate and we stand by the security of Israel and the wider region which is important for our security here at home,” Sunak stated.

German chancellor Olaf Scholz has also condemned the attack saying that it was unjustifiable and highly irresponsible , saying Israel was fortunate to fend off most of the attacks with assistance from other partners.

Back home President William Ruto has asked for restraint in the region. “This disturbing development only serves to aggravate an already delicate situation in the Middle east. The attack represents a real and present threat to international peace and security and should be condemned by all peace-loving countries,” wrote President Ruto .
