Prosecution, family of monica Kimani wanted Jowie sentenced to death

Justice Grace Nzioka has revealed that both the prosecution and the family of slain businesswoman Monica Kimani wanted Joseph Irungu alias ‘Jowie’ sentenced to death after being found guilty of murder.

While sentencing Jowie to life imprisonment, Justice Grace Nzioka has revealed that the prosecution wanted the court to consider Jowie’s use of an intricate weapon to slit the throat of Monica Kimani and further attempting to conceal evidence as enough reasons to grant him a death sentence

The prosecution also cited there was no provocation from the deceased to murder Monica Kimani whose death caused physiological and physical harm to her family and described Jowie as being “criminogenic”.

Calling for a similar sentencing, Monica Kimani’s family argued that there no commensurate payment that can bring their kin back to life

Nzioka further noted that the mother of the deceased suffered depression and a stroke and that she has hardly healed following the death of her daughter.

These formed the basis of Justice Grace Nzioka’s ruling that “It was not a defensive act. It was not out of provocation. It was planned, intended and executed,”.

Last month Jowie was found guilty of brutally murdering business woman Monica Nyawira Kimani on the night of September 19, 2018, at her apartment in Lamuria Gardens Nairobi.

The court has handed him a life imprisonement sentencing.
