Former Tanzania President Mwinyi set to be buried in Zanzibar

Presidents and State dignitaries are among a host of thousands attending the state Funeral for ex-Tanzania President Ali Mwinyi at Uhuru Stadium in Zanzibar.

Sitting Tanzania President Samia Suluhu announced that Mwinyi will be buried  Saturday in Ugunja domiciled in the highlands of Zanzibar three days after Dodoma announced his passing on Thursday evening at around 5.30 pm at the age of 98..

In a statement President Suluhu announced that the former president succumbed to cancer after returning to Tanzania having been flown back from a London Hospital.

“On behalf of the Tanzania government, I send my condolences to the family, friends and the people of Tanzania on this big loss,” she said.

This as the East African nation also continues with its 7-days mourning period during which flags will be raised at half-mast.

His son Dr Hussein Ali Mwinyi, is the current President of Zanzibar, the Tanzanian archipelago.

Regional leaders including President William Ruto, Uganda’s Yoweri Museveni and former President Uhuru Kenyatta mourned the death of the former Tanzania President as a leader whose imprints will remain engarined in the Tanzania soil.

He was the President of Tanzania between 1985 to 1995.
